What is Kundli Matching?
Kundli matching, also known as horoscope matching or guna milan, is a traditional Vedic astrology practice used to assess the compatibility between a prospective bride and groom. It has been a cornerstone of Indian arranged marriages for thousands of years.
The process involves comparing the birth charts (Kundlis) of both partners and calculating the Guna Milan score — a compatibility rating based on 36 points across 8 different categories called kootas.
The 8 Kootas of Kundli Matching
| Koota | Maximum Points | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual compatibility |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and control |
| Tara | 3 | Health and well-being |
| Yoni | 4 | Sexual compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental compatibility |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament compatibility |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional compatibility |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and genetic compatibility |
A score of 18 or higher out of 36 is generally considered acceptable for marriage. However, higher scores indicate better overall compatibility.
Beyond the Numbers
While the Guna Milan score provides a quantitative measure, experienced astrologers also examine:
- Manglik Dosha — Whether Mars placement creates challenges
- Mangal Dosha cancellation — Conditions that neutralize Manglik effects
- Venus and Jupiter placement — Indicators of love and prosperity in married life
- 7th house analysis — The house of marriage and partnerships
Kundli matching is not about finding a perfect score. It's about understanding the strengths and challenges of a relationship so both partners can work together to build a strong foundation.
